My mom left my dad a long time ago. I was only 4 months old then, so I didn’t know what happened at the time.
Years later, my mom told me the full story. She said she loved my dad, but she discovered he already had a child with another woman before he met her, and he chose to lie about it. That was already painful enough. But what made her finally leave was something more.
When the other woman found out that my dad now had a wife who was pregnant with me, she became furious. She packed her things and travelled from the village all the way to the city where my dad was staying with my mom. The woman turned out to be diabolical. One day, while my mom was still living in the house, my dad found my mom’s pant inside the woman’s bag, mixed and tied with fowls’ feathers. The woman had lied and claimed it was just fabrics or medicine, but it was obvious she was using juju against my mom.
Because of the juju, I spent 11 months and 3 weeks in my mummy’s stomach. The aim was either I die or my mom dies or we both die.
That was the breaking point. My mom finally left the house for the other woman for her own peace and for the safety of her and her child, which is me. She packed our things and left with me when I was just 4 months old.
After that, I stayed with my mom the longest. She raised me alone through all my childhood years. It was mostly just the two of us. Then I went for NYSC, and after the service year, I decided to reside in Abuja.
The woman has one child, a boy who is in his 30s. My mom remarried after leaving my dad and gave birth to three beautiful girls, my angels.
Now I’m 28 years old. I visit my dad once in a while. Every time I visit my dad, he loves me staying in his room. They sleep in separate rooms with his wife, my stepmom. Any time I visit my dad, she doesn’t allow me serve myself food. She leaves whatever she is doing to come serve me food. She gatekeeps my dad’s property. Even though she has her own car, she gets angry whenever I’m driving my dad’s car. She gets angry if I carry his novels to read by saying “don’t carry that book and go ooo your dad reads it.”
The last time I went to the house, while I was about to leave she said “this one your bag is bigger than you brought it hope you are not carrying any of your dads properties.” My dad wasn’t home, he was already off for work. I felt insulted and to stop any form of suspicion, I opened my bag and removed everything one by one.
The recent time I went she still repeated her favorite statement of “why is my bag big when I was about living.” I laughed about it and left the house.
Now I’m honestly not happy with the suspicion and the unnecessary gate keeping of my dad’s property. I’m wondering whether I should tell my dad about this character of hers or just move on and act like everything is fine.
