The stories of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are strikingly similar, and there's one hidden aspect of their success that we often fail to give enough credit for.
Both started playing soccer when they were just a few years old. From the moment they touched the ball, they played every day for hours on end. Coaches described them both as young kids possessing God-given abilities. Then, they both left home at just twelve and thirteen years old.
Messi's family was willing to send Lionel away from his home in Rosario, Argentina, to play for Barcelona's Academy team in Spain. It wasn't just that they sent him there; it was that it separated the family. Messi's father joined the boy, but his mother and all his siblings stayed back. It was a choice that could've ruined the family.
Ronaldo's mother did the same thing. With an absent father and a dream of playing professional soccer, Ronaldo left the small island of Madeira, Portugal, and his mother to go to the Sporting Academy. At just twelve, he was all on his own.
Both reveal a hidden aspect of success: how the decisions and sacrifices of those around you can significantly impact your future. It would have been easy for Messi and Ronaldo's families not to let them go and not to separate the families at such a young age. It might have been the smart thing to do.
If Ronaldo and Messi hadn't gone to such prestigious organizations, they probably wouldn't have had the resources to make it professionally. Both were born in poor cities, with little to no resources, and because of that, the names Ronaldo and Messi might be unknown today.
Success isn't always about what you do but what others are willing to do for you. Never forget that.
