On 29 March 2026, Serbia’s local elections were overshadowed by deeply troubling reports from independent media and observers: violence, intimidation and assaults against citizens, journalists and election monitors. At the same time, the headquarters of the opposition NPS was raided, and its president, along with others, was held for hours under highly questionable conditions. These incidents are not isolated. They reflect a broader pattern already flagged by observers: a deteriorating electoral environment marked by pressure, abuse and shrinking democratic guarantees. At best, the authorities failed to ensure a free and safe vote; at worst, they enabled a climate incompatible with Serbia’s European commitments. Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party, has therefore tabled a parliamentary question to the European Commission, calling for a clear condemnation, an independent investigation, and concrete consequences in the EU’s assessment of Serbia’s respect for the rule of law and democratic standards.
