#MediaResponsibility

The Irish government has budged under pressure from the protesting farmers and announced yesterday that it will reduce excise duties by 10c per litre on diesel and petrol. There will also be a delay in planned carbon tax hikes. Irish farmers, truck drivers, agricultural contractors, taxi and bus operators launched nationwide fuel protests on April 7th, blocking fuel depots, ports and Ireland’s only oil refinery with their tractors and other vehicles. The core issue is soaring diesel and petrol prices, which have jumped sharply due to the crisis in the Hormuz Strait. Protesters argue these costs, combined with Ireland’s carbon tax on fuels including “green diesel” used in agriculture, make operations unsustainable. Farmers highlight that running tractors, machinery, and transport for fertiliser, crops, and livestock has become prohibitively expensive due to the climate taxes. “No farmers, no food” is one of the main slogans used by the protesters. 🇮🇪
