The impact of undiagnosed autism can lead people to feel different, isolated or alien, which, in turn, can lead to higher rates of depression, anxiety and psychotic symptoms. The complication of autism combined with mental health difficulties can hinder access to support, leaving people stuck at home and feeling like a burden to others. Furthermore, stigma surrounding both mental health and autism means these people are doubly disadvantaged when seeking support.

the only reason people object to the label of disability is because it forces you to interact with your own negative opinions of disabled people. or conflating disability with an unjustified victimhood. diagnosed or not, a kid with autism or ADHD is disabled.

The autistic experience of feeling like you’re displaying an animated smile but then realising, to your surprise, that your face looks like it has barely moved and your smile is almost imperceptible.

Happy World Autism Day! I hope that today (and every other day) you can accept your entire self and see that you matter and that you’re important, valid as you are, and equal to everyone else.

Everyone keeps saying reach out if you're suffering. As someone who struggles day to day with depression, I can firmly tell you that it's not that easy. If someone's retracting and not themselves, YOU need to reach out. Most of us think we're burdens. 😕

I hate that it’s always “please get help, please talk to someone” and there’s never actually anyone who can help. No one takes insurance. Out of pocket is $300 an appt. Society doesn’t make getting help easy until a tragedy happens and it’s like “why didn’t they just reach out?”

Autism Acceptance Day. Today, remember that they call it a spectrum for a reason. Your experience won't always mirror another's. Speak for those of us who can't, but never speak over them.
