This is Percy. He was my companion and support during some of the worst times in my life. He helped me through several abusive relationships, a divorce, and the pains of infertility. I loved him with as much of my heart as one can for a member of another species. He was part of my family. My family viewed him as a family member of theirs. Despite the cherished bond I had with him at no time did I consider him to be my child. I may have mothered him as a doting person would a special member of her family, but I was not his mother and he was not my child. This was my choice as I recognized any different view would have been unhealthy for me in the long run as I was healing from a lot of trauma. As a woman who experienced the heartbreak, disappointment, and pain of unexplained infertility for four years I well understand what it feels to love and miss someone who does not exist but you know should with every fiber of your being. To monthly hope for the double lines or the word “PREGNANT” to appear so triumphantly on the test stick. Mother’s Day especially was difficult for me as it was a reminder of who I wasn’t and who I so desperately yearned to be. Percy helped me through this. I was able to love and care for him in a way that helped ease some of the longing and he gave me back so much more. So while I agree that women who care for animals are not fur moms, please consider that when you dismiss a woman wanting to be viewed as a mother you may be addressing one who is dealing with child loss, infertility, regret, and unrealized grief. This post is not to criticize anyone, this is done enough by others daily, but to perhaps give some perspective and sensitivity on the subject. The last picture is Percy with my daughter. She will not remember him as he passed before her second birthday, but I will ALWAYS remember him and hold him dearly in my heart. Love you, Percy. Thank you for the lifetime of unconditional love and companionship you so freely and undeservedly gave to me.
