It has been nearly 15 hours since former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua appeared for an interview on Ramogi TV, during which he openly insulted, belittled, scorned, and humiliated journalists Trevor Ombija and Victor Otieno Juma on national television. Despite the incident playing out live, the Media Guild of Kenya is yet to condemn these attacks or stand in solidarity with its members. Similarly, many individual journalists have remained silent and failed to speak up in defence of their colleagues. The Media Council of Kenya is also yet to issue any statement on the matter. This kind of behaviour by a senior political leader should not be tolerated in a democratic society. All media houses should seriously consider blacklisting Rigathi Gachagua until he issues a public apology and takes full responsibility for his actions. If the media continues to accommodate such conduct without consequences, it will only embolden further attacks. As the saying goes: if you keep feeding the snake, one day it will swallow you whole.
