@bruiser813 @BarrySchust Yea, but Krause played during the era that was strongly defined. Strong Safety plays on the strong side, typically where the Tight End lines up, while the Free Safety roams and watches what the QB does.

Great stuff. Tku I am asking about Emlen Tunnell, who had 79 career INTs. Played '48 - '61 for the NYGiants. For several years Tom Landry was the DC. The D front changed under him from a 5-2 to a 4-3. Sam Huff was one of the first ever MLB. Curious about the safeties of that era. Anyone?

@bruiser813 @BarrySchust Not true. Strong vs Free had been created since the 60s, which Krause played in.

@BarrySchust Emlen played Corner early in his career, moved around based on the roster, and eventually settled permanently at SS when the Giants got Jimmy Patton, who is small, so they let Jimmy roamed. Other teams started to copy, but some would just have Right and Left Safeties.

@BarrySchust As for Emlen & the Giants in the 50s, Coach Steve Owen created the Umbrella Defense (similar to 4-3 defense) to counter the powerful passing attack of the Browns. Emlen, great tackler, played closer to the line to handle the run, while the other Safety played more freely. (cont.)
