@iri_daifuku i don’t really think it makes the piece worthless it kind of just obviously has bias and hopefully someone who isn’t chudded out takes a crack at this concept

@iri_daifuku i can kind of see where it comes from, it takes a kind of … perhaps paternalistic? view, it portrays these people as being symptoms of some kind of moral degeneracy, it doesn’t hold much empathy for them

not a perfect piece, but does point to something real, and which i’ve seen happen in my own hometown; very worth reading if you’re Like Me

@zackerthescar oh i fully think it’s doing a noble savage thing about rural america i just think the fact that it gives a name to this finally is good and it seems to mostly pinpoint the phenomenon

a decade ago i would have thought this was unsustainable and eventually rural america would just fully collapse somehow but i think government money brings back some fraction of what’s on the coasts into the interior enough to keep the whole place on life support

normally, the kids move out when they go to college. but if that doesn’t happen for whatever reason - say, a global pandemic or an economic polycrisis - you end up stuck. and there, like you did as a teen, you end up on the internet as a way to talk to anyone in your generation…

it’s infeasible that everyone move into the cities; rural america is powered by incestuous service economies which bring all the wealth to the coastal owners, and a $12/hr job is not enough to get yourself out of Ely, Minnesota, population 3,268

i think the author is basically right in attributing this to “placelessness”. rural america has been hollowed out for a long time; to a degree even greater than the cities, online is realer than offline, and online is one big pseudo-place!
