The claim had circulated in OSINT circles for weeks, but this is the first confirmation by a major news organization of Ethiopian involvement in Sudan’s civil war. Reuters’ report shows a rapidly expanding site carved out of forest near the Sudan border, with hundreds of tents, heavy vehicles, and ongoing construction since October. Eight sources, including Ethiopian officials, said the camp was financed and logistically supported by the United Arab Emirates, with Emirati trainers involved. An internal Ethiopian security note reviewed by Reuters said more than 4,300 RSF fighters were in training as of early January, with capacity for up to 10,000. The UAE denied involvement, and Ethiopian authorities and the RSF declined to comment. Most recruits are reportedly Ethiopians, alongside Sudanese and South Sudanese fighters. Nearby, Ethiopia has upgraded Asosa airport with new hangars and drone infrastructure. Multiple sources said the airport is being used to supply the RSF and forms part of a broader Ethiopian-UAE military partnership. Regional officials warned the camp’s proximity to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) raises major risks if fighting spreads further.
