The truth is that FIFA is desperate to get India to play in the World Cup, has been for a while as we are literally the largest sports market with just a single sport dominating, the last fairly unexplored major market in sport. They gave us the FIFA U17 World Cup on which I worked for that reason. The women's U 17 as well, they also wanted to give us the U20 tournament if our team continued to do improve, but the AIFF had imploded by then. FIFA, like every world sporting body other than the ICC, wants to bring our huge audiences to their sport. It is our collective sports administration incompetence coupled with a clunky structure of sports being in the state list instead of the central list that is shooting us in the foot. And why most major Indian sporting achievements have been individual, despite the system instead of thanks to the system.

If FIFA decides to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams, then the AFC should receive at least 11.5 qualification slots. With Asia's population, investment in football, improving competitiveness and the growing number of nations capable of competing at World Cup level, a proportional increase in AFC representation would be justified.

@jareen66 @Mohansinha Cricket is a sport snatched from the colonial elite and created into a world class Global IP. Meanwhile every investment into football enriches the Euro elite.

@Mohansinha Because cricket is playing seriously by just 10 Nations and the rest are just wannabes whereas Football is played by almost all the countries in the world and it is tough and challenging sport requiring immense skill

@theunrealbenz This wasn't started by the cricket fans though. Some fans of football in India who can't name the first choice left back in the national team but know the u19 injury record of Declan Rice decided to blame the state of Indian football on BCCI.

Indian cricket lovers flooding every article/posts on Indias football failures with whataboutery and the inevitable comparison to China still haven't answered the one question: why can't India produce a football team worth talking about? Its because of your cricket!

@raitatsunami @RahulRajVerse Let me explain again . Suppose a public-sector company is planning to sponsor the national football league with ₹100 crore. If influential people persuade the company to instead sponsor a cricket tournament, football loses funding

The two biggest reasons cricket became popular in India: 1. Very Very little competition, so it achieved success easily, which pushed the delusion among Indians that they were world-class. 2. The hype around India–Pakistan matches, which was directly linked to nationalism and other sentiments. This further embedded the idea that cricket = nationalism. Ask your parents , grandparents and elders Football was way more popular in india before 1983 world cup. But the fluke win because of very low competition made india think they are world class in something
S.@sayerhsjar

all the kirkit fans crying in comments...you only like that sport because it was fed to you by the government and your parents since you were kids...your favouritism to that sport was NOT natural

@KshSpirit @hbfetr Football has consumed the space & funding occupied by hockey and destroyed it from the inside. Decline of this sport is not an Indian phenomenon, it's a global sabotage from Brussels.

@KshSpirit @hbfetr Another player in this sabotage was the multisport club Ajax which wanted to promote it's football philosophy of "Total football". They collectively converted hockey from a wrist skill sport to a speed sport. This caused the decline of results for the non European teams.

Indian football would grow if players & fans actually cared rather than being performative crybabies. Be it Cricket, Chess, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Badminton, Shooting, Javelin, TT, Boxing, Archery. They started to grow because of players. Govt & people's support came later.

I wish football never grows in India. These football fans keep crying that cricket is ruining football. They never question the performance of our football team, but complain about cricket day and night. And honestly seeing them blame cricket for football’s failure is satisfying.

This guy is still standing by his comment, saying that the BCCI will never invest in football because they fear that if football grows, it will finish cricket in India 😭😭

@AnkitM997 Lol no. FIFA sees us as a cash cow. - we bid for the hosting rights and won it against other bids. -those experts, even if well meaning wanted careers India couldn't afford. -They want us to spend to enrich it's elite. Plenty of blame on AIFF, but FIFA aren't saints.

@MessiKaTatta BCCI appointed businessmen like Jagmohan Dalmiya and Lalit Modi that hurt the sensibilities of its orthodoxy but they moved the game forward and created a global IP. Cricket used to be a part time sport for people with jobs in other countries, today they are millionaires.

This is proper BS why should BCCI give monetary help to AIFF? Cricket has earned its place by winning the 83 world cup being the biggest underdog. Football had the opportunity in 1950s to become what cricket is today but they withdrew out of the world cup and prioritised Olympics
Harsh 17 @harsh03443
