Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, was a Ghanaian lawyer and politician who died on 1 July 2020. He served as General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and later as Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission of Ghana. Born in the Ashanti Region, he attended Seventh-Day Adventist Secondary School in Bekwai, where he obtained his GCE Ordinary Level certificate. He proceeded to Konongo Odumase Secondary School for his GCE Advanced Level certificate. He studied Political Science at the University of Ghana and subsequently enrolled at the Ghana School of Law, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree. He was called to the bar as a solicitor and counsel of the Supreme Court of Ghana and entered private legal practice in 1981. During the administration of President John Agyekum Kufuor, Afriyie was appointed Head of Legal Services at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation and later acted as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the corporation. He remained actively engaged in politics and served as General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party from 2010 to 2014. He lost his bid for re-election to Kwabena Agyapong. In May 2017, while serving as CEO of the Forestry Commission, he publicly expressed willingness to contest the NPP General Secretary position again if there was an overwhelming call from party members. In March 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed him Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, replacing Samuel Afari Dartey. The appointment followed rumours linking him to the position of Chief Executive at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, which he reportedly declined due to his fear of the sea. As a native of the forest zone of Ghana, he welcomed the Forestry Commission role, believing it would enable him to make a greater impact in that sector. His responsibilities included overseeing the various divisions and public agencies under the Commission. His first official assignment was to supervise the national celebration of World Forest Day on 21 March 2017. He held the position until his demise in 2020. FEAR DELEGATES NOT GHOST

The Dumsor Levy of 1 Ghana cedi per litre of fuel bought was introduced by the government as a cost recovery and stabilisation instrument to ensure generation adequacy, fuel security, and grid reliability yet we continue to experience Dumsor daily. What this reveals is a system where revenue mobilisation persists without commensurate improvements in operational performance, suggesting the levy is serving more as a fiscal buffer than a solution to outages. This represents a clear imbalance in the energy trilemma: affordability, reliability, and sustainability. Consumers are paying more under layered tariffs without improved service delivery, while the system remains thermally exposed and operationally fragile. In effect, we are neither achieving cost efficiency nor system resilience, but rather shifting the burden of sector inefficiencies onto the Ghanaian consumer.
