I asked Claud to teach me something new today. This is the reply:
Here’s something that might surprise you given your interest in markets:
The stock market and the economy are not the same thing — and the gap is measurable.
Most people treat them as synonymous, but they track different things entirely.
The economy measures total output, employment, wages, and consumption — it’s a snapshot of right now.
The stock market is a discounting mechanism — it prices in expected future cash flows, often 6–18 months ahead. This is why markets can rally during recessions (investors see recovery coming) and fall during boom times (investors fear it can’t last).
The wild proof: In 2020, the U.S. economy shrank 3.4% — the worst year since WWII. The S&P 500 ended the year up 16%. The market bottomed in March, then sprinted higher while unemployment was still near 15%.
Why it matters for you practically:
When you see bad economic news — layoffs, weak GDP, falling consumer confidence — your instinct might be to sell. But if that news was already expected, it’s already priced in. Markets move on surprises, not facts. A company can miss earnings and go up if the miss was smaller than feared.
This is also why experienced investors say “buy the rumor, sell the news” — by the time good news is confirmed, the move is often already over.
It reframes how you read headlines: the question isn’t “is this news good or bad?” — it’s “is this better or worse than what was already priced in?”

Last week $SPY dropped sharply.
This week it surged over 2.6% in a single day.
What changed? A ceasefire agreement in the Middle East.
This is one of the most important lessons in investing: Markets don't just react to earnings. They react to the world.
Understanding geopolitics is part of understanding markets.

Have you thought of soft power has been tried before with Iran and it didn’t work?
I don’t think you understand that we have been in a Cold War. The enemy is inside our country. They’re in seats of power and have been for along time and then Trump came in. Hated by the globalist (republicans and democrats) who aligned themselves with the marxist, islamists, socialists. Those days of chivalry are over for now. My opinion.

I read Art of The Deal
Trump saying “a civilization will die tonight” is straight out of his playbook.
He’s been running it with success for over 40 years.
And that’s the problem.
