If sanctions on Russian oil have been lifted because of the war in the Middle East, will the U.S. sanctions be reimposed now that there is a ceasefire? I think that an answer to this question will expose the reason for lifting sanctions in the first place. We just need to wait and see. There is a reason people do not debate Flat Earthers or Moon landing deniers. It is not because the evidence is weak. It is because the conversation is rigged from the start. A debate requires both sides to accept evidence. Flat Earth and Moon landing denial collapse the moment evidence enters the room, so the only move left is to deny the room exists. Lost two planes to "sand" and destroyed their own helicopters. Videos show heavy clashes, missiles raining down - but not a single person got "even wounded". And the man at the center of it all? Nobody knows who he is, completely anonymous, zero pictures, but Trump says he is "SAFE and SOUND." And so is the rescued A-10 Warthog pilot, who also remains anonymous. My good friend Dave in the UK tells me that Trump's ultimatums, disturbing as they are, are less disturbing than the continued enablement by the GOP. He says the global mindset among politically astute pro-democracy world citizens, is that it's the GOP that is killing America. Nobody weeps for the Iranian regime, Dave says, but the world sees the Iranian people as real flesh and blood people with families and dreams and emotions, but the GOP as purely motivated by politics and political gain, and Trump and his cabinet as unchecked sociopaths.

Based on some of the responses here I think people are operating on a fundamental misunderstanding of the EU-USA relationship. After WW2 the USA was the most powerful country on Earth while Europe was in literal ruins. Thus the USA were the ones who got to dictate the terms of the post-war world order and they are the ones who decided on the current arrangement we are all now living in which is as follows: -The USA is permitted to have military bases in Europe that allow them to project power around the world -Europe would not militarise to the same levels it did previously to rival the USA militarily -In return the USA would handle security concerns and ensure the peace in Europe You can argue whether this was a good or bad deal for either side but it was the USA who decided on this status quo and it is now the USA who wants to abandon it. But you can't have your cake and eat it too. Americans will have to choose between power projection and control vs saving on military spending. Since Trump demanded it and after the Ukraine War, Europe has been contributing more and more to the defence budget and as the Europeans start to pay a bigger share of the pie it's natural that the Europeans will start to ask why the Americans get to have bases in Europe if Europeans can't have bases in America etc and the whole arrangement starts to unravel as we are seeing happen now.
