Researched Arizona’s coaching past in men’s basketball, and in the 122-year history of the program, a permanent head coach has never left for the same position at another college. Russ Pennell, who coached on an interim basis in 2008-09 during the Lute Olson retirement saga, became Grand Canyon’s coach after he was not retained at Arizona. Probably the most interesting departure of a head coach was in 1923, when James Pierce left to become an actor. When he moved to Hollywood, he coached at a high school there and one of his athletes was John Wayne. Pierce’s best-known role was as Tarzan in 1927. So if Tommy Lloyd leaves Tucson for North Carolina or maybe Kansas, he would become the first men’s head coach to make that type of move in Arizona basketball history.

Tommy Lloyd. Elite coach, comes from a big-time program, isn't ancient (51), a Mark Few (aka Roy's best friend in coaching) disciple, etc. Not sure if he'd leave the West Coast and that $11m buyout is STEEP, but he's my #1 choice for the #UNC job rn.
