From Pharisee to Tax Collector: Rethinking Tinubu’s Kenyan Comparison In a recent remark in Yenagoa, Bola Ahmed Tinubu suggested that Nigerians should find solace in being “better off than Kenya and other African countries.” While this may have been intended to soften the impact of economic hardship and rising fuel prices, the comment risks downplaying the severity of the current crisis. It echoes the biblical parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector in the Gospel of Luke (18:9–14). A similar warning is found in the Qur’an (53:32), which cautions against self-righteousness. Like the Pharisee who boasted of his superiority over others to mask his own spiritual void, such downward comparisons serve more as a refuge than a remedy. This validated an earlier dismissive remark by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu during electioneering: “Na statistics we go shop?” Yet statistics remain indispensable - they are the language through which nations understand their condition and chart progress. No country can develop in isolation from measurable realities or without comparing itself with peers. Comparisons, when properly grounded, are not instruments of escapism but tools of accountability. What is objectionable is not comparison itself, but comparison stripped of credible, verifiable data—mere tax collector comparisons that soothe rather than solve. On key development indicators such as security, the Human Development Index, life expectancy, GDP per capita, literacy levels, and electricity access, Kenya consistently outperforms Nigeria. Nigeria is the fourth most terrorised nation in the world, while Kenya is not among the ten worst. Kenya’s HDI ranking is 143 out of 180 countries, with a coefficient of about 0.630, compared to Nigeria’s ranking of 164 out of 180, with a coefficient of about 0.530. Its GDP per capita is roughly $2,200–$2,300, compared to Nigeria’s $807–$835. Kenya’s poverty rate is about 43% of the population (approximately 23 million people), while Nigeria’s is about 63% (around 150 million people), over six times that of Kenya. Kenya’s life expectancy is about 67 years, while Nigeria’s is about 54 years. The literacy rate in Kenya is approximately 81–85%, compared to Nigeria’s 62–65%. Kenya’s electricity access is higher, while Nigeria has one of the lowest levels of electricity access in the world. Kenya has about 3.5 million out-of-school children, while Nigeria has about 20 million. Kenya’s inflation rate has been about 4.5% or lower over the past three years, while Nigeria’s has remained above 15% within the same period. Kenya’s exchange rate has been around USD 1 to KES 130 over the past three years, whereas Nigeria’s exchange rate rose from below ₦500/$1 to above ₦1,250/$1 within the same period. Even with developments in the Middle East and rising oil prices, Kenyans have not experienced the sharp increases in petroleum product prices seen in Nigeria. Across other key indicators, Kenya also performs better. In the end, these indices clearly show that Kenya ranks higher than Nigeria on several development metrics. The standard of living of Kenyans is better than that of Nigerians. If the President considers Kenyans to be suffering despite these stronger figures, then Nigerians are in a far more difficult situation. He should therefore refrain from self-consolation and, in honest reflection, take responsibility for the situation and make a determined effort to drive improvement. This requires a posture of humility, accountability, and commitment to addressing the factors that have slowed Nigeria’s development. A new Nigeria is POssible. -PO

"Always the Southeast"🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡. The last time IEDs were uncovered, you claimed it was a false claim, that nothing of the sort existed in the SE, yet you were proven wrong. Keep pushing bigotry while your brothers and kinsmen are being displaced and killed back home. Thanks to the clearance ops, people are returning to their villages, and like I always say, there are enough evidences. And yes, ops are happening everywhere around the country, in every region, and the Southeast won't be an exemption. You can keep crying, that's what you do best!

If you mean business, tell us who released the captured gentle the yahoo and angel makeup. You captured them and released them to go back to killing our people. To put this into perspective, Sambisa forest alone is 2 times larger than Belgium and twice the size of Israel. It spans across 6 or 7 states in Nigeria and is significantly larger than the entire South Eastern region of the country. This vast territory was once a stronghold for Boko Haram under the leadership of Abubakar Shekau, where millions of people were displaced from their homes as the insurgents hidden in the dense canopy held thousands of fighters and heavy equipment to create a caliphate under themselves. But the military fought back, reclaimed these territories from the insurgents, and drove them back into the Lake Chad Basin and the remote borders of the Mandara Mountains under 2 years. This is to show you how big Nigeria is, as some states or geolocations are much more larger than some European countries.

Coming to the UK from overseas is a privilege, not a right. Any foreign national with a history of crime and violence is not welcome. If you pose a risk to our country, you will be refused entry or removed.

Reminds me of a boy they brought to me to learn graphics and video editing one time from Oshogbo. When he arrived, he brought a brand new laptop so I told him to bring it out and power it on, he said “I don’t know how to power it on” in Yoruba, I was like “and you want to learn graphic design?”, that showed that he wasn’t familiar with a computer at all, I took it from him and power it, launched pre installed MSWord and told him to type, he said “I don’t know how to” 😂😂😂 I asked him if he typed on his phone, WhatsApp, social media etc, he said he doesn’t know how and he has no smartphone, Walai ori mi koko gbona wa 😂😂, where will I start from? I got really annoyed and just left him there, then called the person that brought him, he begged me that he would maybe ask him not to come the following day. For whatever reason, I looked at him and felt what he would do when he leaves, so I brought him closer, taught him how to power on the laptop, showed him few things on typing and introduction to few things on coreldraw. Guess what, this bot arrived the following morning with about 10 pages typed document on MSWord, few text and colours on coreldraw, I was completely blown away, it dawned me that the boy is brilliant but not just exposed to brilliant people to tutor him, he only needed a nudge from a brilliant mind. I didn’t only teach him Groahic design but video editing, cinematography and printing, there is little to what I can do that Sodiq can’t do today, I left projects in his care and he handled perfectly. He left @InvigorateVis about 5 years ago and went back to Oshogbo, he messaged me this year and I saw that he’s now a fashion designer, I queried him and he said that’s where his passion lies, he sews fantastic natives, yes he sent me one and I was wowed. People just need the right opportunity.

Harrison Gwamnishu has recounted how he recovered ₦500,000 from operatives of the Tiger Tactical Squad, Umuagba, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after they extørted a victim as bail charges. According to him, on 31st March 2026, operatives of the squad reportedly stormed an apartment, arrested occupants, and fålsely accused them of involvement in child r!tûål activities. The victims were unlawfully detained and allegedly pressured to pay ₦498,000 via a POS account before they could be released. In desperation, the victims’ family had to borrow money to secure their freedom. Upon receiving the complaint, he escalated the matter through the Inspector-General of Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU), with the support of Prince Adedigba Adeyinka Daniel. Following swift intervention, the full sum of ₦500,000 was successfully refunded to the victims on 5th April 2026. He further stated that the new Inspector-General of Police has emphasized that bail is free, but noted that some police stations are still violating this directive. He advised members of the public to report any police misconduct through the CRU for prompt action

This is one of the reasons why it is important to quickly alert the police when in distress. Two ladies were kidnapped and a ransom of #5000,000 was collected. Acting on available information, operatives of Delta State Anti kidnapping Unit trailed the suspect and after ensuring the victims are safe, swooped in on them, and engaged them a gun duel, three of the suspected kidnappers died as a result of the gun shot injuries sustained, one AK-47 rifle and the ransom money recovered. CP Yemi Oyenisi personally handed the money to the victims.
