Historian Dr JJ Klaas argues that the Xhosa Cattle Killing was not a result of "mass delusion" or blind prophecy, but a logical attempt to halt the spread of a lethal European disease called lung sickness (bovine pleuropneumonia).
According to Dr Klaas's perspective:
Cattle Culling vs. Prophecy: The Xhosa were practicing cattle culling—a deliberate strategy to stop the spread of a highly contagious infection that was already ravaging their herds.
Decimation of Resistance: He asserts that the disease was a form of biological warfare introduced by the British to destroy the Xhosa's productive capabilities and break their backbone of resistance after they had successfully held their ground in previous frontier wars.
Colonial "Cover-up": Dr Klaas claims the story of Nongqawuse's prophecy was a colonial narrative constructed to hide the fact that the British used disease to conquer the Xhosa, rather than defeating them on the battlefield.
Historical Context: Other historians, such as Jeff Peires, also note a strong correlation between the rapid spread of lung sickness and the cattle killing, observing that Xhosa owners often slaughtered herds where the disease had already broken out rather than waiting for them to die.

Some Xhosa surnames and clans are derived directly from Khoisan languages, genetics, and heritage
Xhosa tribes and clans continued... #xhosacouture ...Many Xhosa surnames, clan names (iziduko), and cultural practices are directly derived from Khoisan (Khoikhoi and San) heritage, particularly in the Eastern Cape.
This resulted from centuries of intermarriage, economic interaction, and the assimilation of smaller Khoisan groups into the expanding Xhosa nation, introducing clicks into the isiXhosa language and specific ancestral lineages.
Key Khoisan-Derived or Influenced Elements:
Clan and Family Names: Specific clans, such as AmaGqunukhwebe (derived from the Gonaqua), Sukwini (originally a Khoi clan), and Qoco, are historically identified as having Khoisan ancestry.
Geographical Naming Influence: Many place names and local names in the Eastern Cape originate from Khoisan languages, such as Gcuwa (Butterworth), Qumrha (Komga), Qoboqobo (Keiskammahoek), and Ngqushwa (Peddie).
Language & Clicks: The use of the three click consonants (!, //, /) in isiXhosa was adopted through deep contact with Khoe-San languages, which is not found in other Bantu language families.
Cultural Assimilation: The Gqunukhwebe and other groups were formally assimilated into the Xhosa cultural structure, adopting Xhosa traditions while retaining their distinct origin.
Genetic Admixture: Genetic studies and historical evidence suggest significant Khoisan genetic markers in many Xhosa-speaking people, especially those in the southern regions of the Eastern Cape.
The Name "Xhosa": Several studies suggest the name "Xhosa" itself is derived from a Khoi word, often interpreted as "angry men" or related to "we the people" (Khosa).
History of the Khoisans in South Africa - Right for EducationThe interaction was a mix of conflict and co-existence, with the AmaXhosa being agro-pastoralists while the Khoi were herders and the San were hunter-gatherers, all of whom shared in the creation of the modern, linguistically diverse Xhosa population.

On this day 14 years ago, Mac Miller dropped Macadelic.
Coming off the success of Blue Slide Park, this was the moment Mac showed he wasn’t just the “frat rap” kid people tried to box him in as. Macadelic felt darker, more experimental, and way more personal, a clear shift in both sound and mindset.
The tape featured records like “Loud,” “Thoughts From a Balcony,” “Fight the Feeling,” and “The Question” featuring Lil Wayne, one of his biggest co-signs at the time. It also brought in production and features from names like Kendrick Lamar, Juicy J, and Casey Veggies, showing Mac was leveling up his circle and sound.
What made Macadelic different was the psychedelic, introspective vibe, you could hear the transition from the carefree energy of his earlier tapes into something more complex. Themes of fame, substance use, and self reflection started creeping in heavy here, laying the groundwork for everything that came after.
Despite being a free release on DatPiff, Macadelic still moved like an album, millions of downloads, constant rotation, and a fanbase that really started to take him seriously as an artist, not just a moment.
Looking back, this tape was a turning point.
Not just another mixtape… this was the beginning of Mac evolving into who he would ultimately become. #macmiller #macadelic

By the time Jay-Z released “The Black Album” and retired in 2003, he was already the greatest rapper of all-time.
His 8-year-run from 1996-2003 is the greatest run by any rapper ever.
8 years. 8 solo studio albums. All great. 4 certified classics, maybe 5. 2 top 10 rap albums ever.
Collab albums, a classic mixtape, features, soundtracks, ghostwriting, etc.
Critical acclaim, commercial success, impact, influence, consistent greatness, iconic tours, legendary live performances and moments, classic interviews, etc.
He had already established a legendary rap label and put on a bunch of talented people in position to dominate the music industry for decades to come.
He achieved all of this in 8 years.
Everything since has been him just adding to his untouchable legacy.
He did it better than those who came before him. Outlasted his peers. And everyone who came after him has been influenced by him and has directly benefited from the doors he continues to open for them. They’re all chasing the standard he set.
There is no gahdamn goat debate.
There’s Jay-Z, and then there’s every other rapper ever fighting for positioning.

It’s truly remarkable that there was only a five year gap between Reasonable Doubt and Blueprint. Hov had a whole rap career in five years.
