Get this! In November, a New Zealand bottom trawler pulled up a load of dead coral and on the Lord Howe Rise in international waters in the South Pacific. This triggered a rule under the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), to temporarily close the location to bottom trawling. Greenpeace then offered to survey the area with underwater cameras to document the damage - but the NZ Govt refused to hand over the coordinates, citing 'commercial sensitivity'. However, because the area was closed to fishing due to coral destruction, all the fishing companies would have been sent the coordinates so that they would know which areas were closed to fishing! The commercial sensitivity excuse doesn't wash, and the Australian Government seems to agree because THEY have just given Greenpeace the coordinates. So next week, @GreenpeaceNZ will embark on an expedition to the area and deploy deep sea cameras to collect images and data of the ecosystems, identify the species living in them and document the damage done by bottom trawling. Watch this space! #nzpol #auspol #NZOverFishing #BanBottomTrawling

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives You don't need to be in the country to vote if you're on the role, you can do it at the nearest consultant or by post. They already allowed people to vote overseas for up to 15 years, now they've changed it for the rest of your life. You still need to be on the role though

@terrasea @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives Based on flight data only 2/3% of Brits used FoM for more than holidays. Under 3mnths absence and it’s a holiday 🙄Can commute to EU🤷‍♂️ Drive, train, swim or a mix of all. So if fly out, pick up a car, dive back same day, you’ve emigrated, no flight back can be found🤣

I remember when they changed the law and I thought it was a pathetic knee jerk reaction to a woman who came here specifically so her kid could be a NZ citizen. I'm still pissed off about it. Now we see what the consequences are and it's cruel.
Richard Hills@RichardHills_

Please reconsider this decision @ChrisPenknz this is ridiculous. He was born here, schooled here & only knows New Zealand. Govt used its discretion with Candice Owens to overturn that ruling. So we know you can use it. Show the government has heart. stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360582…

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives You're talking about hypotheticals anyway. Authority don't really care if a few manage to break the law to get the vote as it's hardly going to matter that much. If they're in large numbers, then they will do something, and then you'll probably face being prosecuted.

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives You still needed to register on the role and to do so you need to, by law, live there and be considered ordinarily resident. And you could move overseas and vote from there once you're on the role. You could get someone to lie about you living with them, but that's illegal

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives I never said that you couldn't do it, but it's not as easy as you make out. But you still need to register in a constituency and either live there or pretend to. Pretending to is not as easy as you think, unless you have people there willing to lie about you living with them

@terrasea @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives How would they know where you live? There’s no requirement to inform Govt, might pick it up from visa applications. There is no reliable data, Ppl live and work abroad, I do as necessarily. Just need an address in 🇬🇧 to register at. Postal votes, proxy votes etc,

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives Yeah but the residence requirement of being ordinarily resident hasn't changed. But if they do change that, then that's on them. Currently you have to be ordinarily resident.

@terrasea @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives I don’t know what rules applied when you wanted to vote. They change. Incumbentbgovts change them for own political benefit. More voters. Was once suggested not to allow Brits in Spain to vote, politically biased “class”. Couldn’t work, proxy votes.

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives No I think you'll find all they did was change it so you could vote for the rest of your life overseas. Previously it was 15 years overseas that you could vote before you lost it. Those who gained it back still had to have registered while lived in the UK before they left

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives I still have the vote, but it's still in the constituency I last registered in before I left. I still had to have lived there to register there in the first place. I thought I'd explained this

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives I think you will find you do. You need to be ordinarily resident to register. That's the law. You might get away with it, but you would still be breaking the law. You can, once you have registered, move overseas and vote, but you still need to be resident to register

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives Because I wasn't on the electoral role. I have to first live there and be considered ordinarily resident. Those rules have been in place for decades. If you're not ordinarily resident and you pretend you are, you're breaking the law. You might get away with it, but it's illegal

@SageofomahaNZ @Oldie452 You don't know what you're talking about. Either that or you're lying. It was closed by refining nz or whatever they call themselves. It wasn't the govt of the time. You're trying to rewrite the history books, just like Luxon and co

@Oldie452 Yes it was shut down by the Government. Megan Woods didn’t want it shut down but Jacinda and Robbo waived it through….just to offshore some carbon emissions. Utterly crazy decision. Oil usage is expected to be virtually the same in 2040. reuters.com/business/energ…

@jezobrien @KemiBadenoch @Conservatives Don't understand what you are talking about. I wasn't born in the UK, yet I couldn't vote, use the NHS until I moved to the UK. My parents are British granting me citizenship. The only real advantage that gave me overseas was FoM around the EU till Brexit and right of abode in UK

@GaryPayinda NZ is not that pristine. I remember the Manawatu river was reported to be the 5th most polluted in the world. I found that hard to believe, but it was and may still be very polluted, even if it looks clear. Still I get your point stuff.co.nz/environment/30…

The French Government sent its agents to Aotearoa to bomb the Rainbow Warrior - because Greenpeace and the nuclear movement were so effective in their campaign to stop nuclear testing. They thought they could scare us off, but they just made us stronger.
Greenpeace Aotearoa@GreenpeaceNZ

This year is the 40th anniversary of the Rainbow Warrior bombing by French Govt agents here in Auckland. Four decades on, we're stronger than ever, and we're still fighting to protect People and Planet. Together, we've shown that you can't sink a rainbow. #PeoplePower

@kiwialliance Depends. I only have experience emailing my MP in the UK. I imagine it is a similar situation to here. I got a reply very quickly, and even had a short chat via email as a result. I think it's a matter of time and if they are interested in replying.

@farmgeek On the odd occasion he says the right thing. If only he'd do that more often, but sadly no. It's like Winston. I don't agree with most of his rhetoric but he sometimes says something I agree with. Didn't change my mind about either of them though
