One of the three journalists killed in the Israeli airstrike on a clearly marked humanitarian vehicle in central Gaza early Wednesday was Abed Shaat, a veteran freelance cameraman who worked closely with CBS News for years and regularly filed footage from Gaza, CBS News said on Wednesday ➤ Shaat, 30, has recently married, and was remembered by CBS colleagues as a brave, highly skilled journalist working under extreme conditions. He had also contributed to AFP, though he was not on assignment at the time. ➤ The two other journalists killed were Mohammed Salah Qashta and Anas Ghneim. ➤ The Israeli military said in a statement that its troops "identified several suspects who operated a drone affiliated with Hamas in the central Gaza Strip, in a manner that posed a threat to their safety," and then "struck the suspects who activated the drone." ➤ As Drop Site News reported earlier, the journalists were embedded with the Egyptian Relief Committee and were filming humanitarian aid distribution when they were struck. Israeli forces routinely justify killings by claiming an unspecified “threat” without presenting evidence, a pattern Gaza authorities say has accompanied the killing of 483 Palestinians since the ceasefire 100 days ago, more than 96 percent of them struck inside residential areas far from the so-called “Yellow Line.”
