@ChrisHSohn @JustinAion 2/2 And if we have to “oversimplify” in order to meet that level of development, then (in my opinion) this is where we start discussing the developmental inappropriateness of some of the math standards we must teach. Mile high and inch deep.

@ChrisHSohn @JustinAion I don’t disagree! I think the term “opposite” could indicate everything you just said. The negative indicates to do the opposite of what would’ve originally been done. I wouldn’t necessarily call it oversimplification, but more like teaching 8th graders at their level 1/2

@JustinAion @ChrisHSohn Let me add: I also show them that there’s still a 1 being multiplied in front and the order of operations applies. So 2^-3 for example is 1x2^-3 which is 1/2^3. It’s hard to type it out the way I explain it visually but I hope this makes sense!

@JustinAion @ChrisHSohn I typically emphasize that a negative sign simply means “opposite of” in really any situation… so if the positive exponent represents repeated multiplication, then a negative one represents the opposite (division).

Super proud of my friend/colleague @Mrs_HWoerner for sharing about the PLC process with @ASD_1Excellence instructional leaders. It is an honor to be a part of the guiding coalition at @PowdersvilleHS and work alongside her.

@NatBanting I get what you’re saying and do have an opinion on this… but couldn’t the same logic be applied to every subject? I don’t know a lot of folks who are grateful they learned Shakespeare. I think school, in general, is a lot of wasted time, and wish math wasn’t always the bad guy.

Here's a thought I'm having today: If we want math class to be widely applicable (content-wise) to the "real world," where does the content stop? Can we argue for anything beyond basic arithmetic, geometry, statistics, and probability? so.... grade 8 is plenty

The science of learning is absolutely fascinating to me. It’s no surprise that I continue to learn so much from this awesome scientist and educator. I’ll say it again- teachers, if you haven’t read #PowerfulTeaching from @PoojaAgarwal and @PatriceBain1 , do it now!

Open Middle@openmiddle

We just added another 29 new problems to the openmiddle.com website. You can see 10 of them in the "Recent Problems" section of the footer. Thank you to the entire volunteer @openmiddle team for working through these problems to get them on the website.

I truly cannot handle sad movies. We saw “EO” tonight. I was stressed and sad the entire movie and left just feeling completely distraught. It was a well made movie with a lot of great reviews, but these kinds of things are just not for me 😭😭😭

@a_schindy @MrsSheehanMath Oh “one day”… I usually read the books before I watch movies based on them but I didn’t do that with this one. I don’t think anything has ever made me cry so hard. My husband thought someone had actually died. I was sad for days. That was over 10 years ago and I’m still shaken!

@Trianglemancsd 4-year-old: no that’s not a circle. Ummm, I don’t know what that is. It looks kinda like a heart but it’s not. A circle looks like this (then draws a circle in the air). 😂

Enjoying another day of conversation and learning with @k12mathliteracy. Math friends, check out the work they’re doing to help teachers build mathematical literacy in their classrooms. So good! #MTBoS #iteachmath

Congratulations to this sweet kiddo for winning an @AlgebraNationSC prize pack for her work helping students across the state on the Algebra Wall. Bonus fact: she’s the FIRST EVER winner at @PVMSPatriots and @ASD_1Excellence but won’t be the last! 👏🥳

You know what’s fun? Trying to plan lessons for tomorrow knowing I probably still won’t have a voice but I need to be back at school (I took today off). 2/3 classes are taking a test, but we’ll see how that 3rd class goes 😅

Since I still have an awful cold (lost my voice today 😭), I warmed up as much water as I could on the stove so I could at least take a bath. It worked well enough 🤷🏼‍♀️

Our hot water heater couldn’t get looked at today, so they’re coming tomorrow. If they have to replace a part, they’ll have to order it and that will take more time 😭 Not enjoying this saga of broken appliances in the #mtbos… 😅 CC @cmmteach @JennSWhite

@harpgirl555 @MrsSheehanMath I’m not unhappy necessarily but it’s not Schoology. I’m feeling the same as you. I need 8th math (kinda pre-alg, kinda a mixed bag) and Alg1. Maybe we found our mission!

I’m in a new district this year and making the switch from #schoology to #googleclassroom. I’m struggling in most areas with this, feeling lost without Sgy, but especially with assessments. Any suggestions for assessment platforms that do close to what Schoology offers? #mtbos

@MrsSheehanMath Ohhh the Schoology assessments were amazing. I miss them terribly. I actually used to train teachers in our district how to create them. Big fan.

@weaver_math Got it. That makes sense! I’ve never actually used the assessment maker on schoology. If I give a test online I usually make it in Desmos!

@MrsSheehanMath I guess it’s all what you’re used to! I’m looking for varying question types mostly, such as highlight text, drag and drop, math text entry, graphing, drawings, etc. Google Forms just isn’t it and I don’t want to have to use a million add-ons. Edulastic is my best bet right now.

@weaver_math I switched the other way and i actually miss google classroom… 😅 What are you trying to do for your assessments that schoology could do but google classroom couldn’t?
