I’m delighted to announce that, with the help of @SWWDTP, I will be starting my PhD in September @BristolUni and @UniofReading. With @DrShaunRCWalla1 and @emilywestfahey, my project will explore women’s escapes from slavery in antebellum Louisiana. I can’t wait to get started!

Philonise made the decision to flee with her 2 children, Eugene and Gustave, possibly to avoid sale away from them. LA law prohibited the sale of children under 10 away from their mothers, but Gustave was now 14, and their master had recently died, increasing the chances of sale

@hulsey_ryan @MartinSkold2 @FreeManDespair @APTeacher1754 @RBrookhiser There are slaveowners who were, in their day, famous for being humane masters. Alexander Stephens was probably the most notable of them. Andy Johnson was never singled out in the same way, but he does seem to have been a lenient and kind enough master--with strange quirks.
