ARIRANG undoubtedly belongs in the album of the year conversation because it is 1000% the standout of 2026. Unlike other albums, it’s intentional. BTS came back with a hard-to-ignore statement & new sound. Everything else has been uninspired, safe, and boring.

BTS could have come back with a safe, tried and true album that was a callback to their early days and HYYH/LY Era, and the fans would have loved it and it would've been FINE. Instead, they chose ARIRANG. It was a RISK. A BIG RISK. It was a declaration that they weren't going to just stay the same but continue to grow. It challenges us as fans, as listeners! It delves into multiple aspects of longing, reunion, love, and identity. And guess what? The fans still LOVE it. It has caused major discussion not just between fans but from music listeners all over the world. It's gaining recognition worldwide as an artist defining album. It can't honestly be compared to their earlier work. It's a culmination of artistry and technique, on the cutting edge of production and value, and it's absolutely deserving of Album of the Year.

aside from commercial success and positive critics, bts has a compelling story attached to arirang. they went on hiatus due to military service and wrote an album about reconnection to their people, their roots, their fans. that is a body of work. #music
