Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki in an interview with Bloomberg, says that he is not a big gamer. Discusses Sony’s pivot from a consumer electronics company to an entertainment company. “'We Were Forced to Change': Sony CEO Outlines Shift to Entertainment, and Says PS5 Must Be the Best Place to Play.” “We are always talking about PlayStation should be the best place to play from the user's perspective. But also we must be the best place to publish. We have relationships with third-party game publishers. And of course, we have great studios as a first-party as well.”

For those of you who don’t know who Hiroki Totoki is, he is the FIXER. He is the guy who tends to show up in press conferences, earnings calls, and leadership reshuffles when Sony knows something is off and big changes are coming. Not when everything is smooth. Not when PlayStation is just doing its usual victory lap. He shows up when the company needs to reset the direction, calm investors down, and get the business back under control. Example: Bloomberg interview about "PlayStation is the best place to play" Look at the pattern. After Jim Ryan’s exit, Totoki stepped in as interim CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Then Sony split PlayStation leadership in 2024, putting Hideaki Nishino over the platform side and Hermen Hulst over the studio side, with both of them reporting up to Totoki as chairman. Then in January 2025, Sony made another big move and elevated Nishino to President and CEO of SIE, while Hulst stayed ("demoted") in charge of Studio Business but now reports to Nishino. (They were Co-CEOs Before Concord flopped) Yes, Totoki stepped in, looked at what Sony was spending on the LIVE-SERVICE Initiative and decided to cut the losses. (reportedly 8 live-service games cancelled overnight ) Ruthless! Totoki had already been very vocal about profitability and about needing a more disciplined business. Reuters reported that Sony restructured the games division because it needed to improve margins after weaker sales and mounting pressure on the PlayStation business. So this was not random. Now you look at the PC side and it feels like the same pattern all over again. Ironically, Totoki had previously pushed for a more aggressive PC strategy to improve margins. That was part of the earlier business logic. But the more recent reporting says Sony is now pulling back from the plan of bringing future big single-player PlayStation games to PC, with the focus shifting back toward keeping those titles as console exclusives. So if that report holds, then what you are seeing is not just a tiny adjustment. It is another pivot toward what made PlayStation strong in the first place, blockbuster exclusives that give people a reason to buy the console.
