Today, for #WorldCageFreeDay, together with @Act4AnimalsEU, @fourpawsint, @CIWF_Global, and farmers leading the way, we began a 190-day countdown to the EU’s promised modernisation of animal protection laws. After #EndTheCageAge initiative backed by 1.4 million Europeans, the @EU_commission committed to proposing new legislation, including a ban on cages, by the end of 2026. The citizens, animal advocates, farmers investing in higher-welfare systems, and millions of caged animals are counting on the EU to deliver. We won’t stop fighting until cages become a thing of the past.

After seven failed attempts, Anima International helped ban fur farming in Poland, the world's second-largest producer. The industry had deep pockets and serious political cover. We had a campaign and a lot of stubbornness.

18 member states have already banned fur farming. Griffin Carpenter's analysis shows the industry generates -€9.2 million in gross value added. It doesn't contribute to the EU economy, it drains it. There is no case for protecting it.

BREAKING: According to Politico, a leaked EU Commission document is set to reject a full ban on fur farming, offering "stricter welfare standards" instead. 1.5 million citizens demanded a ban. The Commission is preparing to ignore them. 🧵

But here, the retailers are improving as well – as early as 2024 Lidl already phased out caged eggs from all own-brand products sold in Poland. We're glad to see these steps in the right direction, which ensure that customers are not unknowingly supporting suffering.
