A valid point is raised by @nntaleb and @asadabukhalil : Israel has been engaging in summary executions of Palestinians and others for decades, so why go through the trouble and potential scrutiny of legislating a death penalty that will be applied on a strictly ethnic basis? Expressed differently, why now? I think the answer has little to do with Israeli-Palestinian relations and is to be found primarily in domestic Israeli politics. Israeli society, encouraged by decades of impunity, has decisively shifted to the extreme right. In this context the death penalty legislation is primarily an electoral instrument. Those behind this legislation expect to reap a significant political reward for their racist legislation in this year's elections, precisely because the legislation is racist and is about killing Arabs. All indications are that their initiative will pay off. As for the potential scrutiny, after extensive discussion and debate about the executions there may at some point be an expression of concern from Brussels, which will immediately be denounced as an anti-Semitic blood libel, and for which the EU will promptly apologize.
asad abukhalil أسعد أبو خليل@asadabukhalil

Exactly: the notion that the occupation state never had the death penalty (with one exception) is a mere propaganda ploy. It finds it easier to kill Arabs without trial. Why bother with the death penalty law?

I have been told by Serious People that it is an unfair "purity test" to ask whether your politicians think this behavior — funded by your taxes — is genocidal

The Israeli official and convicted terrorist who just yesterday declared his support for a military unit that assaulted a CNN crew & killed a 78-year-old Palestinian-American is now today drinking champagne to celebrate a new law to execute Palestinians.

Visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was one of the most powerful experiences in my life. I don’t have words for Israel blocking Christians from worshipping there on Palm Sunday. Jerusalem is sacred to all 3 religions “of the book.” Access to holy sites is basic humanity.

💢 NEW: Israel kills leading frontline journalists in targeted strike in southern Lebanon Israel carried out a targeted strike on a vehicle in the southern town of Jezzine, killing Ali Shoeib, correspondent for Al Manar—one of the most prominent and widely followed reporters covering the south—and Fatima Ftouni, reporter for Al Mayadeen, along with her brother, photojournalist Mohammad Ftouni, and Shoeib’s son. Shoeib was widely regarded as the voice of southern Lebanon, with his reporting and Telegram updates relied on for real-time coverage of the war. Ftouni was a prominent on-the-ground correspondent who, just before the war, confronted Lebanon’s prime minister, warning that her family in the south was under constant threat—relatives were killed last month before she herself was assassinated in this strike. The Israeli military claimed responsibility and released footage, with a spokesperson referring to itself as the “Defense Army” while describing the killing as the “elimination” of a “wanted” target—language used for the targeted assassination of three journalists. The killings mark the latest in a growing number of journalists targeted in Israeli campaigns across Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iran. Over 340 have been killed in Israel’s assaults across the region.

This is a heinous crime by Israel. An extension of its serial killer campaign, hunting and murdering journalists in Gaza. Shame on all Western journalists and news outlets who refuse to condemn these crimes unequivocally.
Al Mayadeen English@MayadeenEnglish

#AlMayadeen's correspondent to South Lebanon, Fatima Ftouni, was martyred earlier today in an Israeli airstrike that directly targeted journalists in the South covering the Israeli aggression on Lebanon. Fatima was in a vehicle clearly labeled "Press" alongside other journalists, including Al-Manar's Ali Sheaib. Fatima was known and loved by all her colleagues, either from her time as an editor in Al Mayadeen Net, or as a correspondent for Al Mayadeen covering the Israeli war of aggression on South Lebanon. Known for her bravery, steadfastness, and forever love for her profession and her constant desire to deliver the message of her people's resistance to the world, she will continue to live within our hearts for the joy she brought us all as a colleague with her warmth, and her dedication to her field. This is not the first time that Al Mayadeen's correspondents have been targeted. Soon after "Israel" began its war on Lebanon, Al Mayadeen's correspondent Farah Omar and Cameraman Rabih Me'mari were martyred in an Israeli aggression on November 21, 2023. Al Mayadeen's Ghassan Najjar and Mohammad Reda were also martyred in another Israeli attack on journalists on October 25, 2024. This is part of "Israel's" systematic attacks on journalists. In the past three years, "Israel" has killed hundreds of journalists across the region, all in an attempt to prevent the broadcasting of the reality of its crimes. #LebanonUnderAttack #Lebanon

With yet another attempted Kahanist/JDL terror attack, reminder that Blinken removed Kahane Chai, a violent organization with the same founder, from the FTO list in 2022.
Jason Paladino@jason_paladino

May 2022: Biden/Blinken tell Congress they’re delisting Kahanist movement as a foreign terror org, despite concerns by Palestinian rights groups. May 2024: literal member of Kahane family commits an act of terror with his vehicle in New York. How is this not a bigger scandal?

The suspect was involved with the Jewish Defense League, which has cropped up at protests in NYC over the last few years (flag flown outside Columbia’s gate in early 2024) - yet the article dwells on how Kiswani’s anti-Zionism is somehow extremism

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
A member of an offshoot of the Jewish Defense League — designated by the FBI as a "known violent extremist organization" — was allegedly building explosive devices to target the home of Nerdeen Kiswani in a chilling act of political violence. The defendant reportedly planned to flee to Israel following the attack. This comes amid an alarming rise in threats and violence across the country targeting Palestinian human rights advocates. I am thankful that the NYPD and FBI thwarted this plot, which could have endangered Nerdeen’s life and those of other New Yorkers. Let me be clear: We will not tolerate violent extremism in our city. No one should face violence for their political beliefs or their advocacy. I am relieved that Nerdeen is safe. Our city must meet hate with solidarity, and meet fear with an unshakable commitment to justice and to one another.

Thank you for this important statement. There has never been an NYC Mayor willing to call out Jewish extremism for what it is. I also appreciate that you clarified the JDL member planned to flee to Israel. This is an important detail that confirms what I have been thinking.
