The U.S. not discounting perishable foods an hour before closing time is solely because of greed and cruelty. In America, they will rather throw away millions of pounds of food instead of coming up with a solution that benefits all but nope they’ll even arrest dumpster divers.

@_6signxxx That’s not true. They often discount. And by law they can donate it to a charity that processes unsold food or they are required to trash it.

Supermarkets do discount old food. We buy it all the time, and there's always more left. I think the big problem is that there isn't really that much of a market for the discounted food. People will complain about being poor but refuse to buy the slightly old meat and vegetables, or more often just refuse to buy actual food at all in favor of boxed crap.

It’s just insane. When I worked at Panera Bread in high school, we were legally stopped by the parent company from donating leftovers to a homeless charity, instead forcing us to throw it away after allowing closing employees to choose one item. We used to throw away hundreds of bagels and pastries.
