National Gardens Week (9-14 Mar) is your free passport to nature! At the Harold Porter NBG, Garden Manager Berenice Carolus reminds us these gardens are more than beautiful spaces — they’re living collections that conserve and safeguard South Africa’s remarkable plant diversity.

A caracal on a paved path. Birds on indigenous plants. An insect on a flower. Even small pockets of vegetation in urban spaces can support incredible biodiversity. No plants = no wildlife. Support plant conservation this #WorldWildlifeDay 🌿 bit.ly/4039Ju1

The Pink ear (𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴) is a fast-growing, mat-forming groundcover with glossy rounded leaves and delicate trumpet flowers. Endemic to the Eastern & Western Cape, it tolerates heat & drought - and even buries its fruit underground! #FalkiaRepens #FloralFriday

🌿 #ThreatenedSpeciesThursday 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴 was once a defining feature of sandstone grasslands. Today, most of its habitat has been lost to agriculture and development. Now Endangered, its survival depends on protecting the last remaining grassland fragments.

With its pale new leaves and short flower spikes, the False forest bushwillow (𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘪) quietly lights up forest margins in KZN, Mpumalanga and eSwatini each October–November. Slow-growing and well-suited to garden corners. #TreeTuesday #CombretumWoodii

The #NatalForestCabbageTree (𝘊𝘶𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘢) shoots up from SA’s coastal forests, with its spherical leafy crowns emerging above the canopy. Striking and fast-growing, but don’t plant it near plumbing! #TreeTuesday #CussoniaSphaerocephala

Don’t be fooled by its small size, African Blackwood (𝘋𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘯) punches above its weight. This spiny tree produces one of the world’s most prized woods - used for musical instruments, carving, and fine furniture. #TreeTuesday #AfricanBlackwood

🌸 #FloralFriday Meet the striking #BellStapelia (𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘢) — a succulent with deep maroon, bell-shaped flowers (Nov–Jan). Its subtle carrion scent attracts flies for pollination. Indigenous to SA & Eswatini, it’s a hardy, unusual garden feature. 🔔🌱
