Jacob’s choice to make Scott be actually meaningfully older than Shane/Ilya was a great creative choice. The 3 year book thing undermines the idea that Scott has lived in the closet for a long time and is tired of it enough to do something radical. It is also a great mirror for Shane/Ilya of what denying themselves their romance can mean: being lonely and scared for another decade.
