MID-MORNING NOTES: A significant severe thunderstorm/tornado threat is expected unfold across the southern U.S. over the next 18 hours. *The highest potential for long track tornadoes (EF-3+) is across the level 4/5 risk area defined by SPC across parts of LA/MS and far west Alabama this afternoon and this evening. However, a few isolated tornadoes are certainly possible across the rest of Alabama as well tonight, especially the western half of the state. *I would suggest the main concern for Alabama, however, is the potential for damaging straight line winds with a line of storms that will sweep across the state between about 10:00 tonight and 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. Winds along the line could gust to 70 mph in spots, and we expect significant tree and power line damage. *Gradient winds ahead of the line of storms could gust to 40 mph tonight. *So, it is important to pay attention to severe thunderstorm warnings tonight as the line sweeps through the state. And, considering the dynamics involved, you might consider taking the same action that goes with a tornado warning. *Many of you suffer from weather anxiety; just understand this types of threats are common here during tornado season, and simply have a good way of hearing warnings and a good safety action plan, and you will get through this just fine. *You can be a hero tonight. If you are reading this, you pay attention to the weather. Take the time to share important weather information (especially warnings) with family and friends with a text or phone call. You could be the only warning they get. I will post another update later this morning after the SPC update (their next Day One outlook will be out at 10:30a CT).
