Very proud to be part of this beautiful group of folks. We are asking for the closure of Abraxas Academy, a facility that has long been subject to multiple abuse allegations. Abraxas Academy is currently taking money from the federal government to detain undocumented minors.

Abraxas facilities have been shut down previously in the state; we know that these carceral settings are no place for a child. local21news.com/news/local/hum…

We stand with partner organizations across the state urging Governor Shapiro to use his administrative power to call for the removal of detained immigrant children at Abraxas.

Last week, over 25 immigrant justice and youth justice groups signed on to our call to close Abraxas Academy, where migrants and PA youth are being held. Abraxas has had numerous allegations of unthinkable abuse and neglect. It is no place for any child!

As this article rightly notes, returning to failed policies of the past that lock up more kids for longer periods of time doesn't actually make our communities safe in the long run. Investment in communities and families does.

My bill HB 1936 passed the Pennsylvania House yesterday. This bill strengthens fairness in our juvenile justice system by ensuring timely court hearings and preventing youth from being held without proper review. Thankful to @RepBellmon for his collaboration & leadership on this important reform.

The CSG Justice Center just released a new research-based guide, the Youth Safety Playbook to "help states prevent violence, expand opportunities, and keep youth out of the justice system."

A fairer and more effective approach is community-centered and aims to meet the health and safety needs that these kids are lacking.

Instead of defaulting to detaining children in detention and residential facilities, intervening early can make a huge difference in these kids' lives and futures. The statistics show that incarcerating children doesn't lower youth crime or adjudications. csgjusticecenter.org/publications/y…

Right now, there are nearly 32,000 children confined away from home in the U.S. As of 2023, 1,122 youth were incarcerated in Pennsylvania alone. This number does not include youth held in adult prisons and jails. Kids need care - not cages!

Only 14% of all youth under 18 in the U.S. are Black, yet 47% of boys and 39% of girls in juvenile facilities are Black. The U.S. is failing its children - especially Black children!

The U.S. confines youth at a rate that's more than 2x the global average - and well above that of all other NATO member countries. Kids need care, not cages!
