Congrats to Thomas for winning best student poster for his work on the micro biome associated with shell diseases in captive crabs. He worked with other members of the Carmichael and Kiel-Reese labs at DISL and in collaboration with the Alabama Aquarium

After more than 11 years at DISL, our Lab and MSN manager, Elizabeth, has taken a new job with NOAA in their Disaster Preparedness Program. The Carmichael lab sent her off with a surprise party and friendship bracelets! We wish you the absolute best in your next chapter!

We are so excited to welcome this summer’s REU students to the DISL! The Carmichael lab REU student, KayLee (3rd from left), will be studying how the skin micro biome of Bottlenose dolphins changes with freeze/thaw. Welcome aboard!

Our team had a great time at the annual Dauphin Island Sea Lab Foundation Cocktails with the Critters event! Thanks to everyone who stopped by our table to talk about marine mammals!

Our MMRP intern, Sebastian, is spending his last day with us before heading back to Vancouver British Columbia. He will be training to be a captain and working as a Naturalist for “Prince of Whales”. We are going to miss him tons and wish him the best of luck on his new journey!

The Carmichael lab had an amazing time at Discovery Day last weekend! The event was filled with demonstrations from our Marine Mammal Research Program and the Our Wastewater Footprint project. Thanks to everyone who participated!

DISL will be doing double duty this weekend, with Discovery Day on Dauphin Island and Vet Fest at Auburn University. Research Vet Dr. Cat Vendl and DISL’s MMRP Director Dr. Ruth H. Carmichael will be sharing information about DISL research and programs (9a-1p Saturday)!
