Apologize to your player(s). Apologize to your team Strengthen the trust & strengthen the relationship Be real. Players respect it. Your team needs it.

Drills Build Culture Take a simple partner shooting drill How that rebounder does their job can say everything about the team & program Does that rebound casually rebound & pass to their teammate? OR do they do these 3 things at HIGH LEVEL? 1- rebound w/great urgency & hustle 2- pass with precision 3- talk, encourage & give reminders

More coaching doesn’t mean more learning The more coaches say, sometimes the better we feel … but feel isn’t always real Ex: kid misses FT A teammate tells him “don’t think about it” An assistant coach says “hold your follow thru” Another coach says “bend your knees” A family member says “take your time” This happens often the player at the FT line getting several instructions is what coaches do… coaches coach 14 things with their team & teams get good at 0 things Sometimes, less is more. Coach less & see more returns or Coach more of fewer things Become more like a MASTER TEACHER

@CoachSamAllen Coach - Love all 4 of these I use "no squirrel cuts" w/players. Squirrels (in the road) often either hesitate or run back to where they started = getting run over. Players, cut & finish your cuts. It creates space, allows your teammates to trust where you're going & play faster

For me, this is more for the passer and to be more specific, referring to low post For hi post entry passes, those will often be above FT line (think “Horns” sets or 4 out 1 in high post offenses Again, these are general rules from watching a lot of HS & College games and teams beating themselves There are always exceptions to rules and context matters If more players and teams had these, I think they win 2-4 more games a year. Some teams, that # would be even higher I think

Easy rules to reduce TOs 1- if you start a backdoor cut, finish it Be a DEER, not a SQUIRREL 2- Ball Screens Don’t use until screener feet hit 3- no post entry passes above FT Line 4- no jump passes Could probably reduce TOs by 4-8 per game … might lead to 4-10 more points Oh by the way, maybe most importantly…bad shots are just like TOs, sometimes worse STOP TAKING BAD SHOTS

Coaches This time of year...you are probably worn down. You are probably emptying your tank every day. Reminder to take care of yourself. When your tank runs empty, it will be hard to fill up others tanks, specifically your players and fellow coaches. What do you do or what are you going to do to help reset or restore your energy, either daily or at the end of the week? Sometimes not watching that 1 more hour of film and instead doing something for yourself or your family or with close friends may be the better ROI for you.
