You never hear him speak to the players while the game is going on - which I always feel is what makes a ref great

When Ray Parlour got divorced, it was a bad time for him. Arsene Wenger was good with him through it. If he needed time to sort things with his lawyer, Wenger would let him go and do it. Parlour usually said no. He would rather train and keep his mind off it. Then one day a story came out in the papers. It said his ex-wife was going to get 40% of his future income. The reason it was so high was because a court believed she had saved his career. Wenger always read the papers. That morning all the players were in the medical room getting their strapping done. Wenger always came in and went round the room asking how everyone was. Parlour was sat in the corner joking with the rest of them when Wenger walked in. Then he came straight over to him. The room went quiet. Parlour thought he was going to say something serious. “I’ve just read the papers. You’ve had some bad news.” “You’ve just lost 40% of your future income because she saved your career.” Parlour just looked at him. “Yes, boss. Bad news, really.
