I, Babasadiq, was born in Gombe State a place of many tribes and religions but there was never any division in our hearts. We grew up side by side with our Christian brothers and sisters in the same neighborhood; we played together, ate together, and went to school together. There was nothing but love between us no hatred, no fear. In Northern Nigeria, this kind of life is well known. You can find a single household with the same parents but different religions perhaps a Christian mother and a Muslim father, or vice versa. Yet, we respect one another, visit each other, and even spend nights in one another’s homes in peace and happiness. But today, there are attempts to ignite conflict among us. Some people are pushing an agenda to divide Muslims and Christians so that we turn against each other. If we fall into this trap, then they have achieved their goal. We must understand that those who seek this conflict are not defending any religion they are simply using us to achieve their own interests. The truth is, everyone is suffering in this country. Many lives have been lost both Muslims and Christians but the truth is being twisted, and falsehood is being spread to fuel more tension. This is not the teaching of Islam, nor is it the teaching of Christianity. Both religions preach peace, patience, and compassion. History has also shown us this. During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), some of his companions were sent to the land of a non-Muslim king, who received them with kindness and gave them refuge. Even today, we see real examples where some scholars and leaders have protected the lives of Christian brothers and sisters during times of crisis. Therefore, the time has come for the people of Northern Nigeria to unite, set aside selfish interests, and refuse to be divided in the name of religion or tribe. If we truly want peace, we must live with one another in patience, protect each other, and refuse to be used by those who seek to cause division. Let us remember: We cannot live in peace unless we stand together. We cannot progress unless we stop hating one another. We cannot survive unless we protect one another.
