The feeling in the West Ham camp is that if they hadn’t been relegated, Matheus Fernandes would be valued at well over £100 million. He’s younger than Elliot Anderson and, statistically, has been the better player too. They also owe Southampton a 15% sell-on fee, which makes it easier to understand why they’re holding out for a big price. I think Manchester United simply have to decide what they want. Fernandes has reportedly given us priority. At this point, just send £70 million total package and get the deal done.

This is exactly why you move early in the window. It’s what Barca did with Gordon and tried to do with Alvarez. It’s what City have done for years and they’re doing it again now with Anderson. The longer you wait, the more complicated everything becomes. I just can’t see INEOS operating like that. They’d rather sign a third choice player because he’s available than push hard and get their first choice targets early on. Now not only do United have to compete with Madrid, but West Ham also have the leverage of a potential bidding war.
