Today I gave the 1st Emotional Intelligence Workshop for interns/med studs at my residency program. Today's workshop was about emotional self-awareness. We started w/ interactive game & case study, also gave this out to track moods - thanks @gretchemaben for the graphic! Success!

“Bless you prison, bless you for being in my life. For there, lying upon the rotting prison straw, I came to realize that the object of life is not prosperity as we are made to believe, but the maturity of the human soul.” ― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn (especially hard day today)

@HarryZeitMD These things (esp time) costs $. If there were systems that believed in this whole-person centered wellness, I would think they would have worked on the upstream causes of burnout in the 1st place- like automatically offering paid leave 4 instance, or getting rid of 24 hr shifts

We are mostly well-intentioned individuals, who do want the best for others. And we can do better, whether in the realm of physician wellness or mental health care, by becoming trauma-aware, trauma-informed & sincere about creating change in our systems of care. 8./

What we know in 2023. We should avoid at all costs allowing people to be left in survival stress. Our capacity to remain mobilized is limited, eventually we shut down and this has serious consequences. 1./

@HarryZeitMD Like everyday in residency....As an attending now, I try to embed my personality more into my practice. I like to laugh and joke around with patients, it puts us both in a better place and more open to each other

@HarryZeitMD Thank you! Yes, I thought it was good too :-) I grew to miss my patients, and now I love talking to them again. It was a joy to come back. I love hearing their stories, and am learning to balance it again

@DoctorsRHuman So many people don't when that's what they desperately need. Good for taking care of yourself and taking the time you needed after residency.

Whether we technically win or not, I have already won: stronger relationships w/ colleagues, renewed passion for my work, knowledge I have something to offer, even firmer belief in the power of teams (the strongest part of our #MentalHealthMavens application) TY @MGHSpringboard

When @MGHSpringboard put out a call for #SheSolves awards, I forwarded it to some awesome women colleagues, and then deleted the email 1/

On #InternationalWomensDay, it's particularly impressive to note how women from across @MassGenBrigham are committed to making #healthcare more #userfriendly. The response to our #SheSolves Awards was remarkable!  It is an honor to be a part of these innovators' journeys.

A physician health program that tells you (& I'm a therapist!) that when you're burned out, you need therapy & yoga (I won't even touch on 'mindfulness') is a lie. You need time off to recover. Then therapy & embodied practice to support the recovery, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒊𝒕.

Grateful for sunshine, wind, birds, our hens, mangoes growing on our mango tree, and electricity that allows my fan to work in such heat. So much to be grateful for! The best thing is to be alive! #Gratitude Anyone else to share what they are grateful for?

Gratitude for all there is and what is to come. 'What you are seeking is seeking you' is not just a poetic muse. It's a universal law. May we learn to live it 🌻

@HomelEssdocCAN Of course you're right. It can definitely be straightforward. Didn't mean to minimize or group everything into one bucket. Sometimes bad stuff just happens, over which you have limited, or no control.

@DoctorsRHuman It's not all deep dark stuff. If there is nothing to eat, or your are exposed to extreme heat - it's not the past trauma. Sometimes it's straightforward.

@HomelEssdocCAN Pain is indeed a messenger, it beckons us to explore, act...there is a saying in ISTDP that says "all roads lead to Rome"....underneath the present layers, could be echoes of the past that are not yet consciously known...can chat more offline sometime if you like ❤️🙏

@DoctorsRHuman I think it's actually the present. Hard, physically exhaustive survival taking its toll on body. Although I've learned to appreciate the pain (it's like a torch revealing dark & hidden corners within), it's getting to the point of being too much, even after releasing expectations

@HomelEssdocCAN I would say there's probably something about ur past that would make this blanketing of your rage a protective thing for you. It's something to explore - I'm learning this therapy, ISTDP, that goes deeper -experientially you can uncover that rage so you can harness its full power

@DoctorsRHuman Thank you. That's what scares me - lack of rage. Could be d/t my very hungry stomach or worry about my family...I am getting used to idea that sometimes we might never get us - does not mean defeat. Wins and fights are also mind-constructed illusions.

@HarryZeitMD So true! I learned this from my experience at Esalen, and ever since I have been taking great pains to allow the groups that I am part of to feel as safe as possible, both for my own healing and that of others. It's been a wild ride!

In healing trauma: "While understanding and insight can be supportive, it is right-brain immersion in fields of safety which fosters cellular restructuring. The psyche will reassemble when it feels safe. The body will reorganize when it feels safe." ~ Matt Licata

@DoctorsRHuman Shadow is everywhere. What if Freud was re-born and psychoanalyzed by, say, Jessica Benjamin or Galit Atlas, I wonder where that would go, especially in this modern time, with a greater sense of safety & tolerance for Sigmund (and perhaps a different mother?)

@HarryZeitMD I know right?? Like it's as if Freud felt so impotent in his life from the influence of his mother, that he had to project strength onto the male and ignored women & their personhood altogether. It comes down to Freud's relationship with his mother and how it colored EVERYTHING

@DoctorsRHuman I just read the article and enjoyed it. Thanks! It was interesting to reflect on how Freud's relationship with his mother affected the beginnings of psychoanalysis. And I learned a lot about Otto Rank as well.
