Given the part-time PhD took 6 years to complete, it’s probably entirely fitting that it was another best part of 3 years until graduation! Gradual PhD termination >> abrupt #drought #termination! Thanks to all @lborogeog @UK_CEH who supported #LboroGrad

Proud #Phd advisor, @SandraHauswirth and @JorgeVegaBri giving their presentations at #EGU2022 on drought forecasting and drought termination as part of @EGU_HS. Sad I couldn't support them in person, but proud they did a great job!

🔥Heat wave in Antarctica, +38 °C (+68 °F) above normal. That's not an error, or a typo. The remote research station at Dome C recorded a temperature nearly 40 °C above normal for this time of year, beating the previous March record by a startling 20 °C.

This paper uses a model to argue scientific grants lead to massive wasted effort. Very competitive grants can actually waste more scientific value than they create! Their model shows lotteries with random grants to those above a threshold would be better. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/ar…

Last month's atmospheric river storms brought the exceptionally severe drought conditions in northern California to an abrupt end. Much of the West is still drier than average but much better off than a month ago.

The U.K.'s most durable patch of snow, Braeriach's 'The Sphinx', is now critically small. At just 4 metres long, it will melt completely unless heavy snow arrives within the next week & buries it. Since the 1700s it has melted 6 times (1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2017 & 2018).

Important messaging around #drought #recovery (or lack thereof) in the Western US: “overhauling… management practices to accommodate... swings in dry and wet periods” “region will slip into drought more easily… and each time it will be harder to emerge” washingtonpost.com/outlook/2021/0…

Pressure on water resources is growing. More houses are being built, our population is increasing and forecasts indicate that we will use more water. Accurate hydrometric data is critical for ensuring water can be abstracted and used sustainably. #WorldRiversDay #Hydrometry

Power of the #monsoon! Rainfall deficit end of August (left) turning to rainfall surplus in mid September (16th, right). Red colors showing drought and green wet areas! Entire scenario changed due to rainfall in a few days! Regions faces both drought and wet extremes!!
