@RANK10YGO I mean of course not. Games were released at a much slower rate and with far less competition in the 90s and 2000s. Of course no one game is gonna stay on the public conscience when I get a new shiny video game every 4 months.

"Greatest year for video games ever" is such a stretch. It's better than average but it's nowhere near close to late 90's-mid-2000's. I've loved a bunch of games this year but I don't expect most of them to stick in the public conscious nearly as long as any of the hits from 2001
