@yoonamii_ That's very fair. I try to do voice acting and just fumble in front of the mic sometimes.

@FreeMeNotAudio i think it’s just me freaking out when i’m in front of the mic in contrast to chilling in the showers / while cooking but definitely, the acoustic is different so that also contributes to why!

I've been doing audio engineering for like a decade, so I have experience in this. You might be able to work things out without buying new equipment. Something like a filter change and changing your mic position could improve things. No pressure to, but feel free to reach out if you would be interested in having someone look over your filters and setup. Your SM7B is fine, but a recommendation would be based on what you want out of the sound and budget. Could you tell me what you feel the issue might be?

So I’m looking to either update my audio gear or just figure out my settings/room treatment to see where I can improve. Does anyone have any advice? Currently own a Shure SM7b + Scarlet Solo Gen 3 + Cloudlifter CL-1 I have some filters set up in OBS but I’m wondering if I should get a Rodecaster Duo or something else. I really want to improve my stream and video audio quality 🥲

Dealing with a snare that just can't be made to have more body. The mic bleed is so bad that I just can't make it sound how I want.

@KristoffGreyVO I really love the neural dsp stuff. It would probably help when mixing DI, since most stuff probably won't come from a real cab. I'm also going to need some drum trigger at some point since people can't smack a snare hard enough.

What all do i actually need for modern rock/metal mixing? I've got melodyne essential, and will be getting the UAD spark bundle.

People like to treat the mix stage as if it's the problem solver. 90% of your fixes should come from the recording stage. Fixing your room, learning to mic instruments, choosing a mic, mic technique as a singer, etc. The mix should be there to help blend, balance, and prepare for the mastering stage. My biggest piece of advice as an audio engineer is to mix with purpose. Not every decision comes with a why as you are making it. You figure out what affects what over time, and apply that knowledge with intent behind it. Boosting, cutting, and compression are done with purpose. If you have to ask why you did something, then you probably didn't need to do it. Too many lessons online are just applying BS to something that doesn't need it. Don't be afraid to experiment and figure out what is doing what. Crand an EQ, slam a compressor, twist knobs until you hear it make some sort of change. Learn what that change is and apply it in the future when you need it.

anyways this post is because i'm trying to learn mixing and courses are all well and good but what's really been a bottle neck has been: - why does this sound wrong and how do I fix it - something is different but what is it - i made a change but is it better or worse

HOW TO GET BETTER AT ANYTHING! I SWEAR THIS APPLIES TO BASICALLY EVERYTHING. For whatever it is that you are trying to get better at, you need to learn how to assess/evaluate what you are doing in order to identify what is going well and what should be better, as well as what is hard/complicated vs what is easy/simple. I may be stating the obvious but you cannot improve unless you know WHAT needs to improve. You also cannot improve unless you know what improvement will EVEN LOOK LIKE. So your OFF TIME is honestly just as important as your practice time. You can't become a better writer without reading. You can't become a better singer without a good ear. You can't learn how to tailor clothes unless you know what well-fitting clothes LOOK like. HERE IS MY SIMPLE PROCESS IN PRACTICE 1. let me look at the thing I just made or did 2. what is good? what doesn't seem right? compare to something or someone you admire and see where you may fall short. For extra credit, ask someone you trust for honest feedback and compare what they say to what you thought! 3. for things that can be better, let me try to problem solve solutions myself 4. once i get as far as I can, let me see what other people's solutions have been to similar issues 5. rinse and repeat forever

I used to chase loudness in a mix when I was younger. Everything would just get louder over time as I processed and balanced. My experience is showing by maintaining balance during the mix without being overly loud. Knowing how to calibrate my system has helped me a ton.

My new monitors let me hear things that I couldn't before. So many things just sound like ass due to me hearing their flaws.

Been slowly learning how to do everything-- mixing. editing, animating, drawing, etc for my content So I hope y'all don't mind my noobness as I learn to get better...! It's a lot of work & takes time but the lil dopamine after finishing something is addicting 😤✨

@tomomoyap I agree. I've been an audio engineer for over a decade, and have been recording since I was 14. There's just so much garbage about audio being circulated now. Advice I'd never hear from professional peers. It's only TikTok trash advice and internet clout chasing.
