What makes large-scale cooperation possible? In his book, "Socialism," Ludwig von Mises argued that the answer is private property. Without private property in the means of production, there can be no rational allocation of scarce resources. Building on this insight, Rosolino Candela shows that Mises' book offers not just a critique, but also a positive theory of liberalism: private property under the rule of law enables economic calculation, sustains social cooperation, and replaces privilege with contract.
