I looked through the statements. Every single month, without fail, he had been putting money into it. Even during years I knew things were hard. Even during the time he was working two jobs and barely sleeping. The balance was enough to cover almost my entire college tuition. I realized in that moment, he didn’t say no because he didn’t care. He said no because he was choosing my future over my present disappointment. He let me think he was the bad guy so one day, I wouldn’t have to struggle. He never explained. Never took credit. Never told me what he was doing. He just carried it quietly. And somehow, that hurt more than if he hadn’t done it at all.
