@esargent184 Almost certainly disturbed by something, if they aren't actively building the mound those impressions can last for a few days. Kind of looks like a footprint from something stepping in it, but I'm not sure. Maybe a raccoon?

@lovetheants For what it's worth, for behavioral studies I try to collect fragments from a decent distance apart (km scale) so that I can feel confident that those ants/nests from each site haven't interacted with one another in a meaningful way. I look at distance as a variable just in case.

@lovetheants I'm definitely going to be checking back here for ideas, RE Argentine ants. It seems that most consider fragments from one colony to be independent samples, but the questions are often looking at how (the very few available) colonies differ.
