2 years ago I couldn’t care less about F1. Now I’m setting alarms to get up at 3am for the sprint and 7am for qualifying. I love the drama!

🚨AI; Why it’s shit The quote pictured below came from OpenAI SEO Sam Altman as part of a wide-ranging discussion about the benefits of AI. This followed similar remarks by Bill Gates, who gleefully argues AI could soon replace doctors & teachers, leaving humans obsolete in most job sectors. It might not be entirely accurate to describe those two as supervillains, but both are so out of touch they seem to view the destruction of the white-collar workforce as a desirable outcome. Altman, in particular, often discusses the inferiority of the puny human worker in the face of his all-conquering AI model, with all the empathy & sensitivity of a serial killer tormenting his victim. For the best example of this kind of dystopian thinking, you really need to watch the Doctor Who episode ‘Rise of the Cybermen.” In the 2006 series, a despotic businessman in a parallel universe seeks to “upgrade” humanity by turning the population into emotionless cyborgs. He even executes a politician who seeks to regulate his technology. At the end, the villain screams in desperation before he is forcibly & painfully upgraded. Of course it is completely far-fetched to imagine a similarly happy ending to the scenario we face in this universe, though it would be no less deserved. Instead, the billionaires forcing AI on us are given even more billions in government subsidies to prop up their data centres. When you look at the cost of AI, those subsidies begin to look like the only thing keeping it afloat. In 2026, Altman’s OpenAI is projected to make a loss of $14 billion. He has committed to spending $1 trillion on AI over the next 10 years, & major losses are projected to continue. Despite this, Altman is very excited about the potential of his technology. In recent speeches he suggests AI has the potential to cure cancer, solve climate change, fix the housing crisis, fight disease, eliminate poverty & lower energy costs. Currently, however, AI’s primary function remains allowing perverts to make more realistic revenge porn. $1 trillion is a lot of money. Probably enough to solve most of those issues without harvesting the entire planet’s fresh water supply & decimating the job prospects of a generation. Businesses often talk about streamlining as they sack hundreds of employees deemed less effective than their robot competitors. After all, you can’t stand in the way of progress. But it does beg the question of what an AI future will look like. Businesses will be streamlined & efficient. Humans won’t be required for most day-to-day tasks, keeping costs nice & low. What those businesses won’t have, however, is any fucking customers. Because we’ll all be unemployed & penniless. So why are these tech billionaires so desperate to force AI down our throats. Many like hoovering up subsidies. Some probably enjoy feeling like they’re changing the world & can’t see the disadvantages. Some are just evil bastards & want to watch the world burn. Most importantly, they know they won’t see the consequences of what they’re doing. They won’t have to face the inevitable Hunger Games style tournament to compete for the last desk jobs in the country. They are far too rich to care about the fake AI-generated videos radicalising a generation of boomers or the damage being done to our creative industries. People often talk about AI & what our future will look like with a sense of inevitability. Fans of AI discuss the jobs that will become obsolete with an almost gleeful delight. But none of this is inevitable. Giving AI companies handouts is a choice, as is the decision not to properly regulate them. Whatever your beliefs about its potential, right now, it’s shit. AI music is shit. AI films are shit. AI search engines are shit. It’s all shit & it’s losing billions. If the tide turns & the next US President isn’t so deeply in the pocket of tech oligarchs, the bubble will burst, & ironically it will be many of these tech bro’s who will become obsolete.
