TRAINING OF SUPERVISORY PRESIDING OFFICERS (SPOs) ON POLLING AND COUNTING PROCEDURES IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2026 SCHEDULED EKITI STATE GOVERNORSHIP AND SIX (6) BYE-ELECTIONS EKITI, ENUGU, RIVERS, ONDO, NASSARAWA, KANO AND KEBBI STATES
The three-day Training of Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) on Polling and Counting Procedures in preparation for the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election and Six (6) Bye-Elections in Enugu, Rivers, Ondo, Nasarawa, Kano and Kebbi States commenced on Friday, 5th June 2026, across all designated training centres. The training was organized by the Electoral Institute (TEI) with the objective of equipping participants with the requisite knowledge and skills to effectively train (POs/APOs), as well as efficiently discharge their responsibilities as Supervisory Presiding Officers in accordance with the Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, 2026.
The Hon. National Commissioner and Chair BEI, Prof. Kunle Ajayi thanked the Commission for approving the Training and emphasized the Commission’s commitment to ensure transparency and peaceful conduct of elections in line with its mandate as enshrined in the 1999 constitution as amended.
In his goodwill message, the Ag. Director-General of The Electoral Institute, Prof. Ibrahim Sani, emphasized the critical role of training in the electoral process. He noted that quality and effective training of election personnel remains a fundamental prerequisite for the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections. He urged participants to familiarize themselves with the Commission’s technology-driven innovations, particularly the enhanced functionality of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Electronic Election Result Form (eEC8A). He further encouraged participants to uphold the virtues of integrity, professionalism, and competence in the discharge of their electoral duties.
Similarly, the Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed, advised participants to demonstrate a high sense of responsibility and integrity as election officials. She stressed that the programme should not be viewed as a routine exercise but rather as a strategic capacity-building intervention designed to improve election administration. She underscored the importance of maintaining high standards during the cascade training for POs/APOs, who will be directly deployed for election duties. She further reminded participants of the need to remain non-partisan and to uphold the core values of the Commission while carrying out their responsibilities.
The training focused extensively on the Commission’s technology-driven initiatives aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and credibility in the electoral process. Key topics covered included the operation of the enhanced BVAS for voter accreditation, the use of the improved INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) for the upload of scanned copies of Form EC8A, polling and counting procedures, election day processes, result management, and the supervisory roles and responsibilities of SPOs.
At the Federal Polytechnic Satellite Campus, Ado-Ekiti, notable dignitaries present included the Hon.Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC EKITI STATE, Dr Bunmi Omosehindemi who advised the trainees to be above board and adhere to the code of conduct for election officials. Others at the training include the Administrative Secretary of INEC Ekiti State, Mr. Tope Aina, and the Head of Department, Electoral Operations, Dr. Rahman Badru. Facilitators for the training were drawn from The Electoral Institute and INEC Headquarters, Abuja.
