I was supposed to be on a flight to Kona right now. However, my flight has been delayed or canceled three times by two different airlines over the past few days due to a blizzard. Planes are stuck because of ice, air conditioners suddenly fail, people can't reach the airport due to traffic and delays, and previous flights are out of place. All this because of a little snow. Now... what would happen if our nations were under attack? This serves as a stark reminder of how small changes can reveal failure conditions in technology. We often take many things for granted, but once the tiny support is removed, everything falls apart. Late last year, large parts of the internet collapsed due to minor configuration issues at Amazon and Cloudflare, multiple times. Blockchain networks that are "decentralized," couldn't be utilized due to centralized reliance of infrastructure. All Verizon customers in New York lost service for an entire day because of a "software" problem that caused a "glitch." The reliability of our shared worlds at large is tested by events like these. And as much as I am a fan of AI, I can't help but think the reliability of software systems will see a temporary error of decline as we become more reliant on them for essential infrastructure. So... how do we mitigate these things? Snow shouldn’t be a single point of failure. Neither should our internet, money, or communications. If “a little snow” can break the system, the system is overdue for a redesign. Resilience is the product. Everything else is a feature.
