I absolutely hate coffee, it is like rocket fuel for anxiety. What is bizarre is that green tea induces a significantly different feeling of calm, but focused energy for me (even when I normalize for the same dosing of caffeine as coffee). I have tried all sorts of synergistic blends of supplements with coffee to mimic this feeling (theanine, ALCAR, taurine, GABA, teacrine, etc) and have been unsuccessful. There is something unique about the metabolic entourage effect of the distribution of endogenous alkaloids in green tea that gives me a unique stimulus of calm, focused energy. I recommend consistently trying out green tea (or matcha), if you dislike the effects of coffee.

Can someone explain to me what's so great about coffee? I've never liked it, and at 37, I still don't get the hype.

I know I’m extremely late to the game when it comes to Game of Thrones but the last couple of weeks my wife has made me watch it. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I feel compelled to write a 5-page essay every time this guy utters five words about anything related to pharmaceuticals. There are many more pharmacological differences beyond the drug half-life when comparing methamphetamine to amphetamines (and we still probably don’t know the extent of the downstream metabolic and neurobiological differences). The most notable difference lies in the extra methyl group that methamphetamine contains (which significantly increases its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier). This is why the therapeutic dose of methamphetamine in the medical literature is much lower than that of prescription amphetamines. The main problems with methamphetamine (from a pragmatic standpoint) are the difficulties of sourcing legitimate methamphetamine, its addictive/abuse potential, and the common route of administration (smoking). It is practically impossible to get a prescription for legit Desoxyn (the brand name for meth) or even a generic form of it (and the DEA reported that there were only 1,800 legal prescriptions for methamphetamine in 2024). Even if you somehow manage to get a legal script for it, the overwhelming majority of pharmacies will refuse to fill it (which they are legally allowed to do under the Controlled Substances Act). This means that nearly everyone would have to use street methamphetamine in order to use it at all, which comes with all sorts of adulterants, cutting agents, impurities, and variable distributions of l-isomers (which cause all sorts of significant cardiovascular side-effects, as compared to pharmaceutical-grade methamphetamine). Over 60% of meth users smoke it (according to most recreational surveys, including one that I read from the University of Washington) and many oral-only meth users eventually become meth smokers. This is very problematic because heating/smoking the drug introduces all sorts of adverse thermal byproducts and impurities that have detrimental effects on your health and cognition. Smoked meth also bypasses the liver and produces a much more rapid and intense neurochemical high (which increases the addictive potential and significantly worsens the dopaminergic-related excitotoxicity and sensitization). It is certainly no meme that many occasional meth users eventually become meth smokers, and many meth smokers eventually become homeless, brain-addled, and hopelessly addicted (usually ended up dead or incarcerated). I doubt Clavicular has a Desoxyn script (or even a generic methamphetamine script), and this was just standard rage-bait that I bought hook, line, and sinker like a low IQ fish. Regardless, I felt compelled to write this meth treatise just to dissuade any impressionable people that come across this post: DO NOT DO METH!!!

Agreed. Male hormones (and immunity) tend to be optimized around 12 percent. The lower you drop into the single digits, the more your body interprets it as a starvation risk and activates evolutionary-tuned protocols to increase hunger/fat-storage and decrease exertion (through the dramatic drops in T3, sex hormones, and leptin and the dramatic rises in cortisol and ghrelin).

A bizarre, out-of-place “sex heals him” joke would be more characteristic of the bad writing in later seasons, not the more careful writing of season 1 (and it also wouldn’t make sense with the exaggerated hunched posture that he adopts when leaving the room minutes later). He also pretends to be Tyrion’s loyal confidant in season 2, but then betrays him by immediately going to Cersei and leaking Tyrion’s plan to send Myrcella to Dorne. When Tyrion confronts Pycelle, he immediately retreats into the bumbling, obsequious act (and tries to blame Varys for the leak), before Tyrion reveals that the entire thing was a canary trap and consigns him to the black cells. This clearly indicates that he is a deceptive person who plays an obsequious act to extract confidential information from people (and then broker it to whomever he views as the most powerful force in King’s Landing). I thought his act was pretty obvious at the time. If you did not, then you are free to have your own opinion. I do not share it.

Yes, I’m disagreeing with one academic linguist’s theory based on my readings of various other academic linguists’ papers (along with my own reasoning and observational experiences). I’m agreeing to disagree because I do not want to have to write out multiple paragraphs (and provide reference sources and paper citations), when I don’t even have the ability to hyperlink sources over text. Twitter is unfortunately not a good forum for long-form debate or long-form discussions. As much as I hate Reddit, it is much better engineered for discussions of that nature.
