One thing that keeps coming up after Pierre Poilievre’s Diary of a CEO interview is his personal story — adopted as a baby, raised by school teachers in a humble middle-class home, his father later came out as gay, and he married Anaida, who came to Canada as a refugee from Venezuela.
Yet a lot of people seem to really dislike him… while praising Justin Trudeau (raised with every advantage as the son of a former Prime Minister) and Mark Carney (the wealthy former banker).
How did so many in Canada end up feeling that way?

Must say, after announcing that my column at La Presse was suspended, I couldn’t believe the number of emails and messages of support I’ve received—it’s been truly incredible. I’m very grateful to see our work being recognized in this way.
I’ve also received three offers to become a columnist with different outlets, which is very flattering. All the media I’ve interacted with over the past few days have been respectful of my views and supportive—which I truly appreciate—with the exception of La Presse, of course.
That said, I’ll take a few weeks to digest everything before committing to anything new.

Some personal news to share. My regular column with La Presse has been suspended indefinitely this week, after 25 years and more than 1,000 columns. This was not my decision. The decision is linked to recent public comments I made on social media regarding the evolving media landscape in Canada, including reflections on government support for media and its potential implications. I understand that these are sensitive and complex issues, and my remarks may not have aligned with the publication’s perspective. While I am disappointed, I fully respect their decision and remain grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to contribute over the years. I would also like to note that my contributions were always made on a voluntary basis. I was never compensated for my columns, and have personally supported La Presse through a paid subscription throughout that time. It has truly been a privilege to write for such an important institution. I continue to believe that open, thoughtful discussions about the future of media in Canada are both necessary and healthy.

Clips of Carney interacting with the public have to be highly edited because of how awkward he is in person. I saw it first hand before he was elected.
I crashed one of his “meet the public” restaurant events and asked what he thought of the UK ruling that women are female.
He short circuited and just walked away without responding whatsoever. Then he proceeded to interact even more awkwardly with others, like I’d seriously thrown him off course.
His PR team would do better to just show us videos of him hunching over a laptop in a dark office, or jogging alone in the woods before dawn. At least those would be believable depictions of the guy.
