In articles discussing the proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi and the firing of the judge who refused to deport him, the NYT fails to inform readers that Mahdawi finished his bachelor’s degree at Columbia in 2025 at the age of 34. He transferred to Columbia in 2021 after studying at Lehigh university in Pennsylvania as an undergraduate since 2018. Columbia’s transfer program is supposed to be extremely selective. Students there are supposed to be on track to graduate in four years, yet Mahdawi was admitted as a fifth year senior and then was allowed to change majors. At no point in his tenure at Columbia did Mahdawi ever appear to complete a full load of classes. According to Columbia’s rules, in order to remain a student in good standing, an undergraduate must be progressing toward an on-time graduation, but foreign activists are permitted to be Columbia undergraduates until they are older than many faculty members. Columbia and Lehigh are both private universities and charge about $70k per year. It is unclear how Mahdawi, who purports to be a refugee, was able to pay tuition at these universities while he was an undergraduate for a decade. Mahdawi also tried to buy a gun and was refused because he told the gun store owner he wanted to use it to kill Jews. Because of a Biden-appointed immigration judge (who Trump just fired), he is still in the United States.
