GREEN BONES Starring Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid Directed by THE Zig Dulay 5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A lot has been said about this movie. And most critics and casual reviews have already raved about it - and they’re correct to rave about it. The first thing that hits you why the movie is beautiful is the fantastic cinematography and vista. The locations such as the prison farm and the Tree of Hope are characters by themselves - they give so much life and personality to the movie. Watching the movie is like opening a story book - and colorful and engrossing one. It captivates you immediately. The second aspect that makes the movie fantastic is obviously the acting. Much has been said about Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid - and they deserve all the praise. The reason why Dennis Trillo won Best Actor is because he disappeared into the role. I never saw Dennis Trillo - the tiktoker, the husband of Jennilyn Mercado, the guy I watched from My Husband’s Lover. What I saw when watching Green Bones was Domingo Zamora, not Dennis Trillo. A prisoner who was assumed to be an evil person but actually had a story to tell. Same goes for Ruru Madrid. I never saw the handsome actor. What I saw was Xavier Gonzaga, an idealistic doe-eyed but criminal-hating prison guard who is quite suspicious of Domingo Zamora. This is what Breadwinner was missing. Most of the cast, especially Vice Ganda, never disappeared into another character. You still saw them as themselves but trying to role play a character. Another actor from Green Bones I have to highlight and who didn’t get much praise is Wendell Ramos. He was deliciously evil especially in a specific scene that surprised me as to what his character would do given certain revelations by other characters. Which leads me to the third factor that made Green Bones amazing - the solid story with great characterization and plot twists. I’m still amazed by the story structure of the movie telling the story of Ruru Madrid first and then Dennis Trillo’s. The dichotomy of characters and sequence structure is giving Triangle of Sadness, except Green Bones didn’t have an explicit third act (but the third act is clearly there). And then of course the words “Babalikan Kita” - which can either mean something negative like revenge or something positive like longing. I won’t spoil the movie but if you watch it, take note of it and it will make sense in the end. Green Bones is not a perfect film for there never is one. But it’s 5/5 because it’s a coherent and solid film that achieves what it sought to achieve - portray the stories of persons deprived of liberty (prisoners) - in a soaring manner. Green Bones should be fielded by the FDCP or the Philippines as our Oscar entry for 2025. It’s almost as good as Thailand’s How to Make Millions, which is shortlisted for the Oscars. You only have 10 days left to watch Green Bones in the cinemas. Don’t wait for it to come out on Netflix - the beautiful vistas and cinematography deserve to be watched on the big screen, not on your iPhones. And for all the Filipinos who say there are no good Filipino movies, try watching Green Bones. #GreenBones #MMFF2024
