If you went back to 2015 and claimed that a founding figure of Al Qaeda in Syria would eventually be elevated to the presidency with backing from the US and Israel, then received with open arms in the White House and across Western capitals, you’d have been dismissed outrightly as a delusional conspiracy theorist.
